Backflow Prevention Assemblies will at times require repairs. Even if there are no visible leaks the internal components do wear out, deteriorate, seize and break. This can lead to testing values being below the required values, thus resulting in a “Failed” backflow prevention assembly test.

Backflow prevention assemblies that are actively dripping from the relief valve are considered “Leaking upon arrival” and thus constitute an automatic “fail” and must be repaired.

According to the Cross-Connection Control Policy Handbook any backflow prevention assembly that fails the annual test must be repaired or replaced within 30-days.

Common repairs include cleaning or replacing check valve and relief valve seats, discs, O-rings and diaphragms. Test cock valves also commonly wear-out, which leads to them dripping.

Performing annual tests and repairing worn or damaged elements of these assemblies is both required by law and necessary to protect our water supply!
